Many companies have recently received an information letter from The Norwegian Tax Administration regarding changes in how to submit corporate income tax returns.
As a part of The Tax Administration’s process of digitalisation, it has been decided that the new corporate tax return must be submitted electronically, through an accounting or annual accounts software.
Requirement to apply accounting or annual accounts software
From 2024 – for the income year 2023 - it will no longer be possible to submit corporate tax return by filling in the tax return forms in Altinn (Internet portal used for communication with, i.a. tax authorities). This means that companies that currently do not submit the corporate tax return through an accounting or annual accounts software, should start the process of finding a system provider that suits the company’s needs. The company can continue to submit the corporate tax return itself, but the submission must be done via an accounting or annual accounts software.
Some self-employed persons must submit the tax return via an accounting or annual accounts software. This applies, among others, to those who have a duty to account, audit duty, or who claim a tax deduction for expenses relating to research and development projects.
For the vast majority of companies, corporate tax returns are already being submitted via an accounting or annual accounts software, either by the company itself or by the company’s external accountant or advisor. These companies will not be particularly affected by the transition to the new submission method as the software providers will make the necessary adjustments; however, some minor changes must still be expected.
Transition to the new filing solution
The new tax return will be available to the majority of companies in 2023, i.e., for the income year 2022, provided that the accounting- or annual accounts software the company applies, supports the new tax return. We recommend those who submit the corporate tax return in the new solution for the first time, set aside some extra time. The Tax Administration recommends contacting the system providers, to make sure that the software used supports the submission of the new tax return.
